Five-Horned Stag Screenprint, Process!

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

I’ve recently finished my latest project, a CMYK screenprint of a five-horned stag! The print is available for purchase at my store (link). This post is a step-by-step on the process of its creation.

For the last few months I’ve been casually reading various textbooks on Arthurian Legends. Roger Sherman Loomis’ Celtic Myth and Arthurian Romance lays out the history of the legends, many of which are based on ancient gods. In Chapter XIV, Merlin the Shapeshifter: “… we have in Mryddin a deranged god whose special domain was poetry and prophecy.” I found the concept of poetry and prophecy being entwined to be extremely enticing. That art can represent, nay, predict the future. I knew I had to create some sort of portrait for Mryddin, who later becomes Merlin in the legends.

Later in this chapter is the following:

A five-horned stag! Now that the imagery was chosen, it’s on.

Summer is getting chillier and autumn is threatening. This summer has been good to me; it was trepidatious at first, with post-graduation upset, but I’m comfortable now. I’m moving forward rapidly, the only fear is stagnation, and as long as I’m drawing every day I don’t think anything can get that bad. I’m going on an East Coast trip soon to visit as many friends as possible, and then I’m in the works for a research-and-art trip to France. I’ll post more about it when the time looms. Here’s a general “thanks.” There are so many people supporting me, all I can do is keep my head in the sketchbook.

Laying my hand…

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Mild romantic-slash-encroaching gestures coupled with a chaotic atmosphere, notably riots in London that I feel oddly connected to, from relationships I have with people over there, and relationships I’ve had. There is a lot of anger, spit and quips from the liberal media that lie useless in my ears and but bring tears to my eyes. Every situation is messy, every situation is political, and all I can manage to do is cower in my food shelf volunteer position once-a-week, and look eye-to-eye with the community I’m a part of. The notch made in my guilt fills tenfold and causes me to tremble harder below my designer sunglasses.

New Store!

Now launching The Store! This has been a long time coming!

Currently available are copies of mine and Tessa Chavis’ collaborative zine It was their first spring, which you can read online for free by clicking here. Tessa is an amazing writer; it’s been two years now since we’ve done this book, but it still feels like my life runs parallel to the story. The struggle with pragmatism and idealism is so relatable. (Love is relatable, too!)

Also available is a new limited-edition screenprint of When I grow up I want to marry a castle!

These were printed at Landland, where I work as a studio assistant. Dan gave me a lot of help, many thanks go to him!

All purchases are greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking everybody!
